The School of Biomedical Sciences is recruiting a visionary Head for the Department of Molecular Medicine to lead and extend our established capabilities, by building on the strengths of the EMBL Australia Node in Single Molecule Science at UNSW Sydney.

Applications are encouraged from (emerging) global leaders in molecular medicine who would be able to inspire and empower the outstanding researchers already within the Department, attract new talent to the School, and integrate shared interests across the vibrant biomedical research community within the Faculty of Medicine and Health at UNSW.

The newly launched Department of Molecular Medicine within the School of Biomedical Sciences will integrate education and research spanning from discovery to translational medicine. At its core, Molecular Medicine has the EMBL Australia Node in Single Molecule Science (SMS)—an initiative founded in 2015 by the late Prof Katharina Gaus—to provide a unique molecular perspective into complex biomedical problems. This Node consists of 12 multidisciplinary research teams with ~100 researchers driving innovation and excellence in advanced imaging technologies and their applications to immunology/virology, mechanobiology, structural biology, biosensing/nano-engineering and theoretical/computational approaches. Our aim at the Department of Molecular Medicine is to extend this interdisciplinary expertise, and technology developed at SMS, to transform precision, molecular medicine and the delivery of next generation approaches to diagnostics, prognostics, treatment and prevention of disease in research and teaching. Kat’s substantial legacy also includes powerful imaging and analysis technology and a dedicated facility (the Katharina Gaus Light Microscopy Facility) that underpins the research at SMS. The foundations of SMS are built upon a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative research culture that has been, and continues to be, purposefully cultivated.
